Deputy Manager – Children’s Residential (Learning Disabilities & Autism) | Sunderland | £40,000 per annum
Are you passionate about supporting young people with learning disabilities and autism? We’re looking for a dedicated Deputy Manager to join a well-established children’s residential service in Sunderland – where every day you’ll help create a safe, nurturing, and empowering environment for young people to thrive.
About the Role
As Deputy Manager, you’ll support the Registered Manager in leading a children’s home that provides high-quality, person-centred care for young people with learning disabilities, autism, and behaviours that challenge.
You’ll play a vital role in the day-to-day running of the home – ensuring the service meets Ofsted and Children’s Homes Regulations (2015) standards while fostering a trauma-informed, therapeutic approach to care.
In the absence of the Registered Manager, you’ll take full responsibility for the leadership and management of the home, ensuring continuity, safety, and a positive culture throughout.
Key Responsibilities

Support the Registered Manager in the operational and strategic management of the home.

Supervise, mentor, and motivate a team of residential support workers.

Lead by example to create a child-focused, compassionate, and professional culture.

Ensure all care practices meet Ofsted Quality Standards and internal policies.

Maintain accurate and detailed care plans, risk assessments, and daily records.

Promote person-centred, trauma-informed care using Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) techniques.

Uphold high standards of safeguarding and ensure all concerns are acted upon in line with policy.

Build and maintain strong relationships with families, social workers, and external professionals.

Support recruitment, induction, rota planning, and ongoing staff development.

Contribute to budgeting, resource management, and on-call support when required.
About You
You’re an experienced care professional who leads with empathy, confidence, and integrity. You understand the unique needs of young people with learning disabilities and autism, and you’re committed to delivering care that truly makes a difference.
You’ll need:

Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (or equivalent).

At least 2 years’ experience in a children’s residential setting.

Proven ability to support young people with learning disabilities, autism, and behaviours that challenge.

Strong understanding of safeguarding, behaviour management, and the Children’s Homes Regulations 2015.

Excellent leadership, communication, and organisational skills.

Flexibility to work varied hours, including on-call duties.

Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
Desirable:

Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Residential Childcare (or willingness to work towards).

Experience contributing to Ofsted inspections or improvement plans.

Training in PBS or Trauma-Informed Practice.
