Senior Residential Support Worker – Children’s Residential (Learning Disabilities & Autism) | Sunderland | £36,000 per annum

Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of young people with learning disabilities and autism? We’re looking for an experienced and compassionate Senior Residential Support Worker to join a dedicated children’s residential service in Sunderland.

If you’re ready to take the next step in your care career and lead by example within a supportive, values-driven environment, this role is for you.

About the Role

As a Senior Residential Support Worker, you’ll play a key part in providing high-quality, person-centred care for children and young people with learning disabilities, autism, and behaviours that challenge.

Acting as a shift leader, you’ll guide and mentor your team to deliver safe, nurturing, and trauma-informed support that helps every young person reach their full potential. You’ll promote a positive home culture, ensure compliance with care regulations, and uphold the highest safeguarding standards.

This is a rewarding opportunity to work in an environment where compassion, inclusion, and empowerment are at the heart of everything you do.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as shift lead, providing direction, support, and supervision to staff on duty.

  • Deliver high-quality, individualised care to children and young people in line with care plans.

  • Promote and implement person-centred and trauma-informed approaches.

  • Support children to express their views, develop life skills, and participate in decisions about their care.

  • Implement Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) strategies and proactive de-escalation techniques.

  • Maintain accurate records, including daily logs, incident reports, and risk assessments.

  • Ensure safeguarding procedures are followed and all concerns are reported promptly.

  • Support compliance with Children’s Homes Regulations (England) 2015 and Ofsted Quality Standards.

  • Act as a mentor and role model, supporting new and existing staff through guidance and supervision.

  • Communicate effectively with managers, colleagues, families, and external professionals.

  • Participate in team meetings, training, and ongoing professional development.

  • Contribute to rota planning, ensuring safe and effective staffing levels.

  • Take part in sleep-in and on-call duties as required.

About You

You’re an experienced care professional who thrives in a hands-on role and genuinely cares about improving the lives of young people. You lead with empathy, patience, and integrity – and you’re confident supporting children with learning disabilities, autism, and complex needs.

You will have:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (or working towards).

  • Experience supporting children and young people with learning disabilities, autism, and behaviours that challenge.

  • Previous experience in a residential childcare setting.

  • Understanding of behaviour management, safeguarding, and person-centred support.

  • Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Compassionate, resilient, and able to remain calm under pressure.

  • Flexibility to work a range of shifts, including sleep-ins.

  • A full UK driving licence (or willingness to travel).

Desirable:

  • Additional specialist training (e.g., PBS, Autism, or Trauma-Informed Practice).

  • Experience acting as shift lead or mentoring junior staff.

  • Knowledge of the Children’s Homes Regulations 2015 and Ofsted frameworks.

What’s on Offer

  • Salary: £36,000 per annum

  • Full-time, permanent role

  • Ongoing training and professional development opportunities

  • Supportive, inclusive working environment

  • Opportunity to progress into senior or management positions

  • Work as part of a dedicated team making a real difference every day

Why Apply?
